  • R: This is the first letter of the word Reverse, and this position is used to reverse the car.
  • D: This is the first letter of the word Drive, and this position is used to move the wheel of the car forward. When the driver presses the fuel pedal and the transmission is placed in position D, the car moves forward.

Many cars also have other options depending on the number of automatic transmission gears, as follows:

  • In the event that the car is reversing and the car is in position D, it must be ensured that the car is stationary and never moving, so that it is in a completely stable position, before passing the speed from D to N and then to R.
  • When passing traffic and parking lights on them, position N can be used for a long period of time; So that no pressure builds up on the gearbox, engine and brakes.
